Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker DR650B 6.5 Amp 1/2-Inch Dual Range Hammer Drill with Storage BagCustomer Review: Powerful Tool for Masonry... Summary: 5 Stars
At least masonry is my main purpose in using this tool, which has ample power and is overall built for masonry with its hammer drill function.
You still have to adjust the chuck with a key (included), but I've never seen a hammer drill which forsook this feature.
The bag is low quality, though. Do seek a better casing for protecting this devise. Aside from this, it comes with a measuring rod and the stabilizing handle common in hammer drills. In the mean time, don't throw away the box it originally ships with, package box not shipping box. The box will hold the hammer drill along with a small enough drill bit box and will fit in nicely enough into the package box.
Nice piece of equipment. Do yourself a favor and if what you need is both to drill and drive (screws, bolts, the like) get yourself this tool. You can drive screws, nuts, and bolts with a conversion chuck (sold separately) which you can get here Hitachi 725405 3/8-Inch Keyless Conversion Chuck for 1/4-Inch Hex Impact Drivers; you can drill into most anything with the drill feature; and when working on masonry or hard rock, use the hammer drill function. Be warned that the drill IS on the heavy side, especially if you consider it for driving, but it's potent enough to do the job, so it's a small downside which beats the alternative of buying a separate driving drill or impact driver.
The hammer drill contains two speeds for your convenience. I got the Milwaukee M18 Milwaukee 2691-22 18-Volt Compact Drill and Impact Driver Combo Kit kit for the drill and impact driver. Nice equipment, but I got these only because I need them for professional jobs. As a side note, I intend to use this B&D hammer drill SOLELY for masonry; the Milwauikee M18 kit will be used to drill non-masonry and for driving screws I will use the LI4000 B&D driver found here Black & Decker LI4000 3.6-Volt Lithium-Ion Smart Select with Exclusive Magnetic Screw Holder. I will only use the M18 impact driver for damaged screw heads, hardened screws, and jobs which really require high torque. This I do so I can calculate well the depreciation cost for the capital investment (tools) and for pricing my services, but if you're a Do-It-Yourselfer, stick with the minimum investment for your needs, and I believe this B&D Hammer Drill/Driver is the perfect answer. Believe me, after calculating depreciation cost per job/service, it's not cheap having tools sitting around your house; unless you plan on trading (buying/selling) them.
On a final note, the instruction booklet is very thorough; matter of fact, I think it's more complete than Milwaukee products I've bought, so don't needlessly overpay for brands. And, don't expect to see a single drill bit. Do buy masonry drill bits for the drill hammer. Any carbide tipped bit BOSCH HCBG700 7 Piece Blue Granite Hammer Drill Masonry Bit Set, for example, will do. Max recommended capacity for bits is 1/2", which is very, very decent.
OH! This baby is corded, so be sure to read extension specs in the manual for using an extension should you need one.
