Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker GH1000 Grass Hog XP 14-Inch 7.2 Amp Electric String Trimmer/EdgerCustomer Review: GRASS HOG BECOMES WORK HORSE Summary: 5 Stars
This review is for the newer version 7.2 amp Grass Hog line trimmer with the orange spool cap.
This very powerful lawn tool used with proper personal safety gear will get the job done.

I purchased the Grass Hog as a replacement for my sometimes non starting, noisy, smelly gass trimmer. So far, I am impressed with the powerful performance of this corded trimmer/edger.
The issue I experienced with this trimmer was what seemed to be excessive auto line feed. The fix was easy. This is what I did.
1. Remove the orange spool cap.
2. Remove the line spool.(Store the line spool for future use. This fix does not require the use of the line spool.)
3. Cut the heavy duty .080 inch line into twelve to fourteen inch pieces.
4. Tie a single knot in the middle of the cut pieces of line.
5. From the inner spool side, feed one end of a cut knotted line through one spool line feed hole.
6. Pull or push line through the spool head until the knot meets the line feed hole opening on the inside. The knot will keep the line from slinging out of the spool head if the line is of sufficient gauge.
7. Feed a second line through the spool side of the other line feed hole until the knot meets the spool side line feed opening.
8. Tuck in the lines on the spool side so the spool cap can be replaced and secured.
9. Replace the spool cap.
10. Inspect to verify that the spool cap is securely attached to the spool head.
Let her rip...but HANG ON!
When the line wears down, remove the cap. From the inner spool side, remove the used line side of the knot and feed the fresh line back through the line feed opening.
Replace the cap.
I pre-cut and knot the line and carry the line in my pocket for easy replacement.
I tested a few lines with a higher gauge than the supplied .080 inch line. The supplied .080 inch line does a good job trimming. The heavier gauge lines worked better when edging.
This fix has worked for me. No more spool issues. I buy line in bulk. A lot less wasted line. (Only the knot is wasted.)
My next improvement is to eliminate the wasted knot using a clamp where the knot is.
I hope this helps and oh by the way concerning the WEAK SPOUSE comment...LET IT GO! CHEERS, Charles
